Welcome to Our Blog!

Our classroom blog was created as a place where we can meet online together to reflect on and explore ideas, share opinions, discuss various topics and also create! I am so excited to be a part of all the learning that is going to go on here and I hope you are, too! Now, what about the name of our blog? The Read Wheelbarrow was chosen as a "play on words" and refers to a very interesting poem (I think) by William Carlos Williams called The Red Wheelbarrow. It is the first of many, many poems we will read and discuss. With it our blogging adventure begins...so, happy blogging everyone!

Happy New Year!

...and Welcome Back! Hope you had a fabulous holiday! Here are two great poems and one "musical" entry for the New Year 2011...The first is only part of a poem by one of our favourite poets, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who wrote The Eagle (such a great poem, don't you think?). The second is an uncomplicated poem, that I happened to stumble across. It was published as a "haiku", but in English, the syllables don't cut it as a haiku...(5-7-5). Puzzling, but maybe it works out in Japanese? The thrid entry is a **link to a little video made by somebody not much older than you are. It is a "Soundscape" (we'll be talking about this in music....). Is this music? art? poetry? What are your thoughts about these first 3 entries of the new year?

By the way, I saw a total of  THREE gorgeous hawks over the holidays, right by my house and on the same day -- this made me think of Tennyson and The Eagle. It was a rather magical experience, as one does not often see these specatacular (and HUGE) birds of prey so close to the city. Anyway, a special thanks to those hawks for choosing a tree by me to perch on...and also for reminding me to post these 3 little gems on our blog! Best wishes to everyone for a Happy New Year!

In Memorium
by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Poem for the New Year

  2. I think the poem in memorium is very interesting because because in the poem in memorium it is about the new year like telling us to do good deeds like ring in out the false and ring in the true. I like the video link because in the video link I like that they use everyday items to make cool sounds in the video link. I like the second poem because it is very short and telling you that lots of things are happening in the new year because it says everything is in blossom.

  5. Ms Kutertan,
Your poem is fantastic because I love the sound of bells and I sometimes speak the truth.
I like Kobayashi Issa because I love stuff when it blossoms.
    Please make more poems.

  9. Katelyn,
would ANY poem about the New Year be great? It sounds like you are excited about the New Year....I am happy about it, too! It is like a blank page in front of you and you can decide what to write or draw on it! There is nothing to go back and "fix" or "correct", it is just waiting for you to create something wonderful!!! :)

  10. Radit and I (Ms. K. corrected the "me and Radit!) both like both of these poems, and think both of them are unique. They are well written and they are the perfect poems to describe the New Year and they will help me celebrate the New Year!

Note from Ms. K: Boys, you do not HAVE to like the poems, but if you do, try to tell me WHY they are perfect or great or how they help you celebrate! I love to hear your ideas! :)

  13. Whoever made this poem should be the only one making poems. I just love poems. My favorite poem is the second one.

Note from Ms. K: Meroj, Why do you like the second one so much? Is it the best poem EVER, or is there another poem on our blog that you like better? Next time, try to support your ideas by giving details about WHY you feel the way you do.

  14. It was random noises...I have no idea why it sounds like the New Year, but the wind up toy sounded good with the door banging in the end. They will go good together. Hope you make another vieo on You tube, I would love to watch it.

A note from Ms. K: Thanks for your ideas, Rami! Actually, I did not make this video, I only found it and wanted to share it with everyone, because I thought it was interesting. I wanted to find out what my students think about it, but you do not HAVE to like it. We will talk about Soundscapes tomorrow in class :)
