Welcome to Our Blog!

Our classroom blog was created as a place where we can meet online together to reflect on and explore ideas, share opinions, discuss various topics and also create! I am so excited to be a part of all the learning that is going to go on here and I hope you are, too! Now, what about the name of our blog? The Read Wheelbarrow was chosen as a "play on words" and refers to a very interesting poem (I think) by William Carlos Williams called The Red Wheelbarrow. It is the first of many, many poems we will read and discuss. With it our blogging adventure begins...so, happy blogging everyone!

Snow Haiku

A haiku is a Japanese form of poetry, which usually has to do with nature. It is organized into 3 lines of text. The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables and the third line has again 5 syllables. Here are some haiku about snow! Clap out the beats of the words as you read them. Can you count the syllables?

Snow Haiku
By Regis Auffrey

Snow is in the air
There’s a hush before the storm
Anticipation

From a sky of lead
Silver crystals start to fall
Dust from angels' hands

The woods are silent
All creatures have sought refuge
As the first snow falls

The snowfall over
The moon rises to reveal
A land of magic

Freshly fallen snow
Sparkles in the morning sun
A flawless landscape

What do you think of these haiku poems? Can you write a haiku?
Happy first snowfall!

  1. Hi MS.K!! I'm back and on the Read Wheel Barrow!
So, I read the new poem, and I must say that was amazing!!! I really liked it. I to, had an antisapation for snow, not because of the dangerous slippery ice, and the fast, fast, and fast snow that feels like needles hitting your face at the very middle and end of the Winter, but because theres so much stuff you can do, like snow angles, or snowball fighting (out of school property),or tasting the snow, or snow castles, or snow forts. Another thing, is that it's Christmas that's comming, and no school. I would realy mis MS.K!But happy Winter!!

  2. Hi Ms.K. How are you? Its almost Christmas and there is finally snow on the ground. Do you like the snow? I do because you can play in it also because its a sign of January and my birthday. One bad thing is that it is very cold and its very cold in the middle of January. Think of what you can do in the snow. Lots of stuff!!! What is your favorite thing to do in the snow. Mine is to have a snowball fight with all my friends on my birthday. Can you believe that every snow flack is different. They look the same but all of them are different. But like you said in the poem(Haiku) that every snow flack sparkles in the morning sun and it is very beautiful when it snows in the morning. Did you ever see it snow in the morning because I have? When is it winter break at Norman Cook because at Elizabeth Simcoe we have winter break at December 17 2010. Hope our school see each other at track and field this year if I make it but I am practicing very hard for it. I just thought of a Haiku I made up. Earth is beautiful/Lots of living animals/A great place to be. Hope you like my poem Ms.K. By the way I am going to come to the holiday concert which I believe is on the upcoming Wednesday and I know that because my brother(Anogen)told me. I hope you guys are still doing recorders for the songs at the holiday concert. Oh yeah my school is right in front of lake Ontario and our class is upstairs so from our class I have an perfect view of lake Ontario. In our class we are learning about Medeival Times and it is really fun but I can not wait until we go to the real place I have heard stories that the grade 5s told me about it but the real place it way better than some story. Well that's all I have to say but have a Merry Christmas!!!:)

  3. Hi Ashvin! It is so good to hear from you on our blog!! It was such a surprise to have you leave us so soon and so quickly, but we are happy for you at your new school! We all hope that you are enjoying your new class and getting to know some new friends :) Thanks so much for your note (your mom brought it in and I read it to everyone). We'll look forward to seeing you at the Holiday Concert on Wednesday...if you know Au Clair de la Lune, Ode to Joy and Jingle Bells, you can come and play with us, that would be so much fun!! Or make a guest appearance on one of the songs if you'd like to :) Also, if you'd like to come and "hang out" in Room 10 with your friends, while we wait for our time to perform, you are most welcome -- or, of course, you can watch your brother and all of the other classes, too!I'm glad you like our Snow Haiku and I REALLY like your haiku, Ashvin! It has such a positive message. I am actually not such a big fan of winter, because I am a gardener and it is impossible to garden in the winter; but you are right: It is a beautiful time of year and snowflakes are, indeed, somehow magical. I will take the positive message you have shared in your haiku. Thank you for this!
We will all look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, Ashvin!
    Bye for now,
Ms. K. and everyone in Room 10

  4. I like the last one, because it describes how the snow feels and how the snow looks. I like the second last poem, too. I like it, because it explains how a kid feels about the snow. Here's a phrase from the poem - 'the moon rises to reveal a land of magic", because I don't know about other kids, but that's exactly how I feel about snow and the idea of winter :) And here's my haiku, it will be about winter and snow: Snow falls all over Covering the ground with stuff bringing joy to kids

  5. I think this poem is about learning syllables and there are a lot of poems and syllables!!

  6. The Snow HAIKU is a great word for a spelling bonus word! That's a weird poem. I think you should do something fake like frosty or red nose or Santa, like on Christmas night (strange music) he flies and gives gifts - what a generous person! But he has been seen, so he is arrested, but he gets taken away by reindeer and continues giving out gifts!

But I loved the poem, it's good and the haiku has 7 syllables, that was very good. Ms. Kutertan, hope you make another terrific poem...or mine! I would love to make my own blog like Ashvin and you, Ms. Kutertan!

  7. Ms. K. do you know that in my other school, me and my class were writing haiku poems and it was hard at the time. But now it's not as hard! Also, all the poems you put on the blog are wonderful poems, but I think this week's poems are the best!!

  9. We think these poems are very wonderful because all of the haiku are related to winter and the weather now is winter, too, exactly like the poem!

  10. What I think about this poem is that it is a very interesting haiku, because in that haiku, it is about snow that is falling on the ground and that is happening right now! Also because there is anticipation in the haiku. The last thing is that in the haiku, it mentions that the freshly fallen snow sparkles in the morning and its colours glow in the sunshine.
